Chiropractic adjustments can help contribute to reducing muscle spasms and irritation to the nerves. By restoring proper spinal alignment, chiropractic adjustments can relieve pressure on the nerves and allow muscles to relax as well as improve spinal range of motion. Before performing any chiropractic adjustments, a complete and thorough exam will be performed to unsure treatment is suitable and warranted as a part of your treatment plan.
We use techniques such as myofascial release, trigger point therapy, active release and IASTM (Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization i.e- Graston Technique) to target specific muscles or muscle groups that are tight or in spasm. This helps to release tension, improve blood flow, reduce pain and improve range of motion. Therapeutic massage or cupping therapy may also be incorporated to help aid in breaking up adhesions or knots in the muscles.
As a part of a typical treatment plan, you may be guided through various stretches and exercises to help relieve muscle tension and prevent further or future spasms or exacerbations of your symptoms. Strengthening exercises may help to improve a patient’s stability and flexibility of the muscles around the affected area, helping to reduce the chances of future exacerbations to the injured region.
Exercises for proper posture and ergonomics may be prescribed as well to help reduce strain on muscles and prevent future injury. This is especially important for people who sit for long periods of time and / or perform repetitive movements.
Athletic Taping may help with supporting the muscles of the injured areas and help to reduce swelling, bruising and inflammation.
Applying heat or cold to the affected muscles can help reduce inflammation and / or alleviate pain. Cold therapy (ice) is often used in the acute phase to reduce swelling, while heat therapy can be beneficial for relaxing tight muscles once the initial inflammation has decreased.
Electric Stimulation (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS)) may be used to provide gentle electrical pulses to the muscles, which may help reduce pain and muscle spasms while also increasing blood flow to the region and enhance recovery.
The Graston technique focuses on manual therapy, involving specific manipulations and mobilizations aimed at restoring proper joint alignment and improving mobility. It is rooted in principles of muscle relaxation, joint mobilization, and postural correction. The approach tends to involve precise adjustments, often with a focus on the spine and the pelvic region, to improve body posture, alleviate pain, and enhance movement efficiency.
